Meaning Of Punjab

Punjab is a land of five rivers flowing in North West India and North East Pakistan. Punjab = Punj + Aab. Punj means five and Aab means water, so Punjab means five waters. These five rivers flow through our state, having their originating source at various lakes in Himalayas. Five rivers are Beas, Sutlej. Ravi, Chenab, Jhelum. Beas and Sutlej merge into one river retaining the name Sutlej at Harike near Ferozpur in Punjab just before crossing the border into West Punjab (Pakistan) and eventually merging into river Indus.

Area between Beas and Sutlej is called Doaba. Major cities of Punjab are Amritsar, Jalandhar, Hoshiarpur, Nawan Shahr, Ludhiana etc. Majha is between Beas and Chenab and on both sides of Ravi, Majha is the Heart of Punjab and cities includes Lahore, Amritsar, Gurdaspur, Siaalkote, Kasur, Faridkot and Ferozpur.    In Majha part of Punjab many new cities were developed by converting the forests into cultivating land and is called Bar, cities include Lyallpur (Faisalabad), Montgomery, etc. Area beyond Chenab river in North and around river Jhelum is called Pothohar, cities include Rawalpindi, Hassan Abdal, etc. Area between Ravi and Chenab river is called Rachna doab cities are Gujarat, Sargodha, etc. Area of Malwa is southern Punjab facing Rajasthan and East of river Beas, cities include Ludhiana, Patiala, Ambala, Karnal, Sangrur, Malerkotla, Shahabad, and Abohar.

Punjabi Civilization is one of the oldest on earth, with its distinguished language, culture, food, attire, script, folklore, people etc. People living in Punjab are called Punjabis and language used by Punjabis is Punjabi. Some reliable resources tells us that our Punjab is 2450 years old.

Punjabi has been the constant point of interaction from people of various languages, customs cultures, and races throughout the history. All these people came to Punjab for different reasons. These immigrants have influenced the Punjabi culture a lot in more ways than once.

Punjabi are famous or their taste of food and Tandoori chiken is regarded as the most popular dish in Punjabi Cuisine. Punjabi cuisine provides a wide array of dishes and is unique in its own sense.

 Punjabi poetry is world famous for its amazing rendering and deep meaning words. If one needs to understand the Punjabi Culture, one should understand the Punjabi poetry as it reflects the mindest of Punjabi heartland.



Punjabi dances-


Punjabi Dances are very popular and they rich in their diversity and variations. Some of the highly famous dance forms Bhangra, Gidda, Luddi, Julli, Jhoomar and others. These dances are performed during times of celebrations such as harvests, festivals, and weddings. Some of these dances can be non religious and religious.
